Heath Ledger's doctors under scrutiny

THE US Drug Enforcement Agency has begun investigating a doctor in California and another in Texas in the matter of Heath Ledger's death, People.com has confirmed.
The Australian actor, 28, was found dead in his downtown New York apartment on January 22.

An autopsy - whose results were announced earlier this month - blamed an accidental mixture of prescription drugs, said New York City's Chief Medical Examiner.

"We are investigating doctors in Los Angeles and Texas with regard to Ledger's prescriptions," the source tells People.com

However, the source did not say whether any wrongdoing is involved, saying, "We don't know yet.

"The agents were there this week, and we are waiting to hear from them."

The doctors in question are thought to have supplied Ledger with Oxycontin and Vicodin, law enforcement sources tell New York's Daily News.

"At issue is whether or not the powerful painkiller were prescribed legally," says the newspaper.

The subpoenaing of Ledger's autopsy results by the Drug Enforcement Administration was reported shortly after the findings of the report were announced.

On February 6, it was said that the DEA would look into the source of the actor's prescriptions.

Besides Oxycodone and Vicodin (also known as Hydrocodone), autopsy results also showed that Ledger's system contained Diazepam (commonly called Valium), as well as Temazepam, which treats anxiety or sleeplessness; Alprazolam (also known as Xanax); and Doxylamine, a sedating antihistamine often used as a sleeping aid.

On February 9, Ledger's former girlfriend, Michelle Williams who is mother of his two-year-old daughter, Matilda - joined Cate Blanchett, Ledger's family and hundreds of mourners at a memorial in Australia for the actor.

On January 26, a private memorial in Los Angeles was held for close friends and family.

Wong Kan Seng Said, " Sorry! "

Mr Wong Kan Seng apologised for the 'security lapse at the Whitley Detention Centre'.

'This should never have happened. I am sorry that it had. An independent investigation is underway and we should not speculate on what and how it happened,' he said, adding that security at the centre had since been stepped up.

I will like to dedicate the song, Apologize by Timbaland to Mr. Wong.

And here it goes: ......."Its too late to apologize!"
- from Timbaland Feat. One Republic - Apologize

Intelligence Chief: Taliban Making Gains in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A resurgent Taliban is back in charge over parts of Afghanistan, the nation's chief intelligence official said Wednesday in an assessment that differed from the one made last month by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

More than six years after the United States invaded Afghanistan, the Taliban has regained control of about 10 percent of the country, Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Just a few weeks ago, Gates touted NATO military success in Afghanistan in 2007 and said the Taliban controlled no land.

"The Taliban occupy no territory in Afghanistan on a continuing basis," Gates said during a Pentagon briefing in January.

Despite his less-optimistic assessment on that score, McConnell said the Taliban has suffered "significant degradation" in its leadership and is unable to successfully face off against U.S. and NATO forces.

He attributed an uptick in violence to the Taliban resorting to the terrorist tactics used by al Qaeda in Iraq -- suicide attacks and roadside bombings.

McConnell also said the "They'll fill in an area when we withdraw, or they will influence a village or region if our presence is not there," he said.

He stressed the need not only for improved security, but also for better governance, noting the federal government controls only about 30 percent of Afghanistan, leaving the majority of the country under the influence of local tribes.

At the Senate threat assessment hearing, McConnell said the same safe haven in Pakistan that has enabled al Qaeda to regain strength has allowed the Taliban to "train, recruit, rest and recuperate and then come back into Afghanistan to engage."

But he praised Pakistani authorities for helping the United States "more than any other nation in counterterrorism operations."

However, Gen. Michael Maples, the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, told the senators Pakistani efforts to confront al Qaeda and the Taliban in the ungoverned regions of the country have had little impact.

"Pakistani military operations in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas have had limited effect on al Qaeda," Maples said.

Both Maples and McConnell expressed concern about al Qaeda's continued effort to recruit and train operatives for terrorist operations against the United States and its allies and its stated desire to obtain weapons of mass destruction.

McConnell and Maples spoke on the eve of a Senate Foreign Relations committee hearing to discuss Pakistan with Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, the second most senior official at the State Department.

The committee's chairman -- Sen. Joe Biden, D-Delaware -- just returned from the region and called the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan "a superhighway for extremists."

"The main message I bring back is that Afghanistan is the forgotten war and Pakistan is the neglected frontier," Biden said Tuesday.

"Afghanistan is slipping toward failure because it has never been a priority, and it has to become one."

He said the Pakistani-Afghan border should be considered the central front in the war on terror.

Flash your phones to redeem discounts

Send them the privileges by phone. And make those goodies more than just about SMS coupons for spa or food offers.

A team of Mass Communication student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) hopes to go one up on other mobile discount strategies. They have come up with a phone based privileges programme that allows users to receive store discounts by simply flashing a wallpaper on their mobile phones.

Hot on the heels of similar services provided by telcos M1 and Singtel, the students took the wraps off their UWtimate Download mobile Service at Home Club, a flea market in Clarke Quay, last Friday.

To get on the service, simply snap a picture of the UWtimate Download icon from online magazine the urbanwire.com, and store the image in your cellphone. Users will then be able to flash the icon at participating shops to receive a discount when making their purchase.

Already, more than 50 retailers are part of this service. They range from food and beverage outlets like Miss Clarity Cafe and Chocz to fashion and lifestyle joints like Polished Divas and Kai.

Tan Shuyun, a final year Mass Communication student in NP welcomes the convenience of being able to "simply flash it at any store I walk into."

She added: "Even better, I don't need to frantically rummage through my belongings to whip out any cards. I will definitely be using this service."

Users who download the wallpaper and register on theurbanwire.com from now till late April will stand to win a Nokia N82 mobile phone.

UWtimate Download was conceived to celebrate the urbanwire.com's sixth birthday and to reward its readers who give the entertainment and lifestyle e-zine an average of 2 million hits a month.

The Seventeen Body Peace Treaty

Seventeen Singapore, a publication of SPH Magazine Pte Ltd, presents The Seventeen Body Peace Treaty as part of its Seventeen Body Peace Project.

Seventeen declares Peace! Most girls are at war with their bodies, berating themselves when they do not meet their imaginary standard of beauty and perfection. "We give up cookies, bread or ice-cream after someone passes a negative comment about how we look in our jeans; we compare our bodies to our friends; and we disrespect our bodies by denying them proper nutrition and exercise."

The aim of the treaty is to inspire and encourage a positive body image among young girls.
The creator of this Treaty, Ann Shoket, editor-in-chief of Seventeen US, hopes to garner a million signatures for the Seventeen Body Peace Treaty by the end of the year. Everyone interested in signing the Treaty can do so online, at www.seventeen.com/bodypeace.

Seventeen encourages all young women to commit to treating their bodies with love and respect.
